Residential BIPV Roof Coverings: Roofing & Electrical Inspection Checklists
The purpose of this document is to highlight common inspection requirements for steep-slope (2:12 or greater) building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roof coverings on one- and two-family dwellings.
The purpose of this document is to highlight common inspection requirements for steep-slope (2:12 or greater) building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roof coverings on one- and two-family dwellings. The checklist is based on the 2021 International Residential Code (IRC) and 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC). It is intended primarily for building and fire departments performing inspections for BIPV roof coverings. This information can also assist system designers and installers in preparing plans to clearly demonstrate compliance. Jurisdictions on other code cycles should still find the checklists applicable to any BIPV roofing system.
While most Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) have gained considerable experience with rooftop-mounted PV panel systems (solar modules and racking, mounted above an existing roof, attached to rafters or trusses), BIPV roofing is a fraction of the residential solar market. As a result, the requirements in building codes and safety standards for their permitting, installation, and inspection are not as widely known.
The growth of more commercially successful BIPV roofing products has prompted interest in how their compliance requirements differ from those of more common rooftop PV panel systems. Those inspecting these installations for the first time may find it helpful to think of them as a “roof” first and as “solar panels” second.
Existing inspection practices for roofing, solar, and electrical can all be adapted for these systems. To reflect this, the checklists have been separated into three categories:
- Decking, Underlayment & Roofing
- BIPV Roof Covering & Accessories
- Electrical Balance of System
